Four Red-tailed Hawk nestlings and one adult. It's very unusual for Red-tailed Hawks to fledge four. This photo was taken by Marilyn McCune on June 3, 2004, just before they started to leave the nest.

Marilyn took this photo on May 31, 2004 of five Common Ravens in a nest just eight power poles up Bear Valley Road from the Red-tailed Hawk nest. The ravens left the nest shortly after this.

As the hawk fledglings began to leave the nest, they weren't flying too well and frequently ended up in the middle of busy Bear Valley Road. Fortunately, they all managed to avoid a collision.

Marilyn's husband, Bill, came home from work June 7 and told her there was a fledging down near the handicapped parking lot of the school. She rushed down and took these photos at about 7pm. It was on top of a shed next to the parking lot. There was another one still in the nest. The close-up was taken from the car with the window rolled down because she didn't want to walk too close and disturb it more.

Clark and Jean Moore saw this bird on the 8th of June, on the fence at the lower driveway to the school. It finally flew across the street and into the trees. They held their breath as it took off low with traffic coming on Bear Valley Road but it made it into the trees. When they returned from town 2 fledglings were back in the nest.
